Tagua

Vegetable Ivory or "Tagua"

The Vegetable Ivory or "Tagua" is a nut extracted from a particular type of palm tree. It contains a large amount of fruit wich solidifies under the heat of the sun, resembling the texture of animal Ivory, that is why it is known as "vegetable Ivory". The tagua is polished and shaped entirely by hand turning each product into a unique piece of art. Th eproduction of crafts from Tagua contributes to the preservation of the tropical rainforest making it a product of ecological importance.
